Today we hosted a fairy tale princess send off for Miss Emily Graver a former Martic student. Emily is an 11-year-old who suffers from an extremely rare neurological disease, Rasmussen’s Encephalitis, that attacks the brain, causing debilitating seizures. The only way to control Emily’s seizures was to remove half of her brain through an operation called a hemispherectomy.
Emily and her family will be traveling to Disney World through Make-A-Wish. The students at Martic provided Emily with some of the necessary things she will need for her trip, including the Ariel princess dress that she desired. Her beautiful gown was designed and sewn by Mrs. Tammy Martelle, a para-professional who works in the district and a special story honoring Emily was written by Mrs. Patti Duff.
One child from Martic asked Emily if she wanted all of her friends from Martic to come with her to Disney. It was in that moment we decided that should be our next field trip. 🙂
